چکیده

We present a method for automatic determiner selection, based on an existing language model. We train on the Penn Treebank and also use additional data from the North American News Text Corpus. Our results are a significant improvement over previous best.

The selection of closed-class words in noun phrase production: The case of Dutch determiners

In three experiments we tested the predictions of two models of determiner selection in the production of Dutch noun phrases (NPs). In Experiment 1, participants named pictures using plural and unmarked determiner + noun NPs. In Experiment 2, participants named pictures using diminutive and unmarked determiner + noun NPs. In both experiments, we found that production latencies for plural and di...

A Logistic Regression Model of Determiner Omission in PPs

The realization of singular count nouns without an accompanying determiner inside a PP (determinerless PP, bare PP, Preposition-Noun Combination) has recently attracted some interest in computational linguistics. Yet, the relevant factors for determiner omission remain unclear, and conditions for determiner omission vary from language to language. We present a logistic regression model of deter...

Reappraising Lexical Specificity in Children's Early Syntactic Combinations

The flexibility and unbounded expressivity of our linguistic abilities is unparalleled in the biological world. Explaining how children acquire this fundamental aspect of human language is a key challenge for cognitive science. A recent corpus study by Yang (2013) has cast doubt on the lexical specificity of children’s productivity, as hypothesized by usage-based approaches. Focusing on determi...

Dominance affects determiner selection in language production

Janssen and Caramazza (2003) show that when producing diminutives or plurals in Dutch, determiner information about the corresponding (singular) base form is active. This is reflected in a time cost for producing the plural or the diminutive with a gender-marked determiner when these forms and the corresponding singular or base form require different determiners. No such cost is observed when s...

Predictive Incremental Parsing Helps Language Modeling

Predictive incremental parsing produces syntactic representations of sentences as they are produced, e. g. by typing or speaking. In order to generate connected parses for such unfinished sentences, upcoming word types can be hypothesized and structurally integrated with already realized words. For example, the presence of a determiner as the last word of a sentence prefix may indicate that a n...
